Thinking of hallways
Will always take meTo that old hallway
Back in Tennessee.
The hallway was lit
With rather dim light
When we huddled there
And talked every night.
When we fisrt started
To rendezvous there,
There was laughter, peace,
And joy in the air.
The plans for the morn,
Affairs of the day,
The gig next weekend,
The trip yesterday...
The more that we talked,
The more we discovered.
Long legs were measured,
Religious views covered.
The hallway became
Our Fellowship Place.
The strong love we forged
Was elite as lace.
A place of bonding,
Of coming undone,
Secrets were whispered,
And wars were begun.
Hugs were given there,
And hands there were pressed,
With high-fives and tears
Our hallway was blessed.
Many emotions
Were shared in that place.
Cold, solemn, closed doors...
Warm, ardent embrace...
Footprints, cat-litter...
Toothpaste, straw, soap, hair...
Sawdust, wood-shavings...
Face-powder, the floor bare...
That hallway floor had
Been walked on by all!
Boots from the swamp to
High-heels from the mall.
And then suddenly
Midst all of our fun,
You read in my eyes,
Hallway Days were done.
We tried not to show
The tears or the pain...
Avoiding goodbye,
Like ignoring rain.....
I'll never forget
The memories made.
Those voices, faces,
They never will fade.
I so often wish
To go there to sit
On our hallway floor
Just to reminisce,
Remember the days
Of friendship so true,
Whispers in the hallway,
And sitting with you.
